3. Analyze the press release and the excerpt from an academic journal article using the tools this chapter offers. (SLR and AATP)
4. How effective do you think the writers are in presenting their findings? What do you think about the appropriateness of the language and structure in these two samples? Explain briefly.

ReplyDelete1. a) The way they write something has a lot more importance than what they are writing about. b) Follow the structure and language of the profession or industry. c) Use the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) format.
2. Notice how the conventions of genres shift throughout the disciplinary contexts.
3. SLR is structure language and reference. In the press release, he uses very basic and common language and reference because his audience, the press, are not educated enough in that field to understand. He uses AATP in a way that he knows who his audience is. In the other piece of writing, he uses very complex terms because he is writing to people in the field.
4. I think the author is good at presenting his findings. He is appropriate with his language use in both as the audience is different. In the one to the press he uses basic vocabulary. In the one to the people in his field he uses complex vocabulary.

2) SLR: Structure, language, reference. these three topics can be used for framework and/ or analyzing a paper, IMRAD: Instruction,methods,results, discussion. Record and publish the result of their research regardless of their discipline.
3) The press release was made for an audience who could understand the writing and language compared to experts in the field. The structure is more formula oriented for experts to understand. Author: Mike Brotherton, Audience: Experts in the field Topic: Blackholes Purpose: Show the evolution of black holes and the Hubble telescope depicts them.
4) It is very effective and tailored to their specific audiences. The language and structure was appropriately chosen for their intended audiences.

1.A. When analyzing writing for a nonacademic audience you want to look at the author, audience, topic, and purpose. B. When looking at academic you want to look at the structure, format, organization, language, style, word choice, reference, citation, and documentation. C. There's also different types of genres for different readers.

3. The author, Mike Brotherton, provides factual information. The audience is the general public interested in Hubble Space. The topic is the Black Hole Evolution in Action. The purpose is to inform and give them information. The word choice is formal. The reference includes in text citations and research.
4. The writers were effective because they gave plenty of information to the audience.

1. Observation is key in developing research questions, genres of writings, its important to follow the IMRAD format when reporting results of research, make sure to identify which rhetorical context you are writing in.

Article: language is directed at a certain group, structured with headings, references past studies.
4. We think they are effective in getting the point across by using different points of research, but that could have confused the reporters about what they were trying to write about. Press release language is appropriate for the audience because it explains in depth what the findings were. The journal article is very structured which helps the audience it was intended for.

1. It is important that we use both primary and secondary research. It is important to know what information is necessary for your intended audience. Discourse communities are groups that share similar values and communication practices that would potentally be a good asset to your paper. SLR will help with analyzing the conventions of academic writing into a deeper level.

3. The author is Mike Brotherton, the audience is the journalist, the topic is astronomy, and the purpose is to inform the general public. The structure is introduction followed by data, the language is general, the references are citations

For the academic writing the headings show a clear structure and the language used is very specific. They show multiple scholar studies as their references.
4. The writers presented their findings appropriately. Both the languages and structures were approriate because they were going to different audiences.
